7 Homeopathy Myths Every Indian Family Should Stop Believing

By Dr. Ria Thukral · MD (Materia Medica) · 2026-07-09

Homeopathy is in crores of Indian homes — and so are the myths about it. As an MD homeopath, Dr. Ria hears the same seven doubts in the clinic every week. Here are the honest answers.

Myth 1: "Homeopathy is too slow"

Acute complaints — fever, cold, diarrhoea, injury — often respond quickly with a well-chosen remedy. What takes time is chronic disease, in every system of medicine. A 10-year-old skin condition will not vanish in 10 days with anything; homeopathy simply refuses to hide it behind suppressants while the root remains.

Myth 2: "The sweet pills contain steroids"

The white globules are a neutral sugar carrier — the remedy is medicated onto them. Remedies dispensed by a registered practitioner contain no steroids. This myth survives because of unqualified sellers; the fix is choosing a registered doctor (NCH/CCH registration — Dr. Ria's is Reg. No. 6837), not avoiding the system.

Myth 3: "It's just a placebo"

Homeopathy in India is an officially recognised system under the Ministry of AYUSH, with government hospitals, national research councils and university MD programmes. Patients are welcome to be skeptical — the honest test is a properly taken case, a properly chosen remedy, and tracked follow-ups.

Myth 4: "You can't take it with allopathic medicine"

Homeopathy is routinely taken alongside conventional treatment. The rule is transparency: tell your homeopath every medicine you take, and never stop a prescribed drug without your treating doctor's advice.

Myth 5: "Onion, garlic and coffee are banned"

In classical practice, only a few specific substances may be restricted — and only depending on your remedy. Most patients continue their normal Indian diet unchanged. You'll get simple, practical instructions with your prescription.

Myth 6: "One doctor's medicine is the same as another's"

The remedy on the label may be the same; the prescription is not. Classical homeopathy individualises — the same skin complaint in two people can need two entirely different remedies. That's why detailed case-taking matters more than the bottle.

Myth 7: "Homeopathy is only for minor problems"

Homeopathy's real strength is chronic, recurring and constitutional complaints — skin, allergies, hormonal imbalance, children's immunity, stress disorders. For emergencies and surgical conditions, hospitals are the right place, and a good homeopath will tell you exactly that.
